Dr. Fan Zhang
fan.zhang@me.gatech.edu
Dr. Fan Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech. She directs Intelligence for Advanced Nuclear (iFAN) Lab to perform industrial control system cybersecurity, predictive maintenance, autonomous control, robotics, and machine learning research. She is the recipient of the 2021 Ted Quinn Early Career Award from the American Nuclear Society for her contribution in instrumentation and control (I&C), and cybersecurity. She is the awardee of the 2022 inaugural DOE NE Distinguished Early Career Program on her project “Robot-assisted Online Monitoring, Online Maintenance, and Dynamic Risk Assessment for LWRs and Advanced Reactors”.

She has been invited by IAEA as a cybersecurity expert to agency mission (Canadian Nuclear Laboratories), consult/technical meetings (IAEA headquarter, Vienna; KAERI, South Korea; Tsinghua University, China; Bruce Power, Canada) and NucSecCyber Webinars. Her patent-pending technology is licensed to a startup company which is developing localized cyber-attack detection devices, sponsored by the DOE.

Graduate Researchers

Ph.D. Researchers

Sungmin Kim
Sungmin is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering. He has earned his B.E. at Kyushu University, and M.S. at Purdue University both in Mechanical Engineering. After his degrees, he has worked as a senior researcher at Korea Electric Power Corporation. Now, he is working on an online monitoring system for nuclear facilities with autonomous robots and artificial intelligence.

Stephen Yoo
Stephen Yoo is a Ph.D student in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology. He recieved B.S. and M.S. degrees in Nuclear Engineering, Kyung Hee University, Korea. His research interests are in security and safety aspects of nuclear facilities, recently focusing on cyber security issues arousing from digital I&C systems being implemented in NPPs. His recent activities cover the developing resilience strategy using machine learning tools against false data injection attacks targeting critical infrastructures, nuclear power plant in particular.

Kai Tan
Kai Tan is a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to this, he received M.S. degree from Tsinghua University in Nuclear Science and Technology. His research focus is on energy system, manufacturing systems, and deep reinforcement learning.

Hojoon Son

Hojoon Son is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), supervised by Dr. Fan Zhang. He received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering and electrical and electronic engineering, and the M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Yonsei University, Seoul, Republic of Korea, in 2017 and 2020, respectively. His master’s thesis topic is “Automated swept path analysis of oversized cargo transportation through deep reinforcement learning.” Prior to joining Georgia Tech, he gained professional experience as a Software Engineer with NEXTLab Company Ltd., from 2020 to 2023. His research interests include knowledge-based systems to retrieve key information from industrial systems and support human decision-making, specifically machine vision, vehicle/robot simulation with reinforcement learning, and decision support systems.

M.S. Researchers

Himanshu Vairagade
Himanshu Vairagade is a Masters student in Robotics, Georgia Institute of Technology. He received B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Design and Manufacturing from IIITDM Kancheepuram, India. Post this he worked with a startup named Vyorius Drones Private Limited as a Robotics Engineer for two years. His recent research interests are in a monitoring systems for nuclear facilities with autonomous robots swarms.

Cheng-Shao Chiang
Cheng-Shao (Hugo) is a Masters student in Robotics, Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his Bachelors’ degree in Electronics Engineering from National Chiao Tung University and Master’s Degree in Computer Science from National Taiwan University. He worked with Lilee Systems for two years and Cadence Design System for a year both as a software engineer. His recent research interests are in a monitoring systems for nuclear facilities.

Megan Huang

Megan is a Masters student studying mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech. She also received her Bachelor’s degree at Georgia Tech for Mechanical engineering. Her current research topic and interests are centered around vibrations and robotics.
