The Real Story on Transferring: Strategic Moves for Your College Journey

This week we welcome Transfer Program Manager, LaSean Jennings, and Senior Assistant Director of Admission, Leri Argueta, to the blog. Welcome, LaSean and Leri!

Hey, high school students (and future transfer students)! Let’s talk about a topic that doesn’t get nearly enough attention: transferring colleges. You’ve probably heard it framed as a “backup plan” or something students only do if their first choice doesn’t work out.

But here’s the truth: transferring isn’t a detour! Each year thousands of students choose the transfer route. And making the switch is one of the smartest and most strategic decisions they ever make. Whether you’re just starting to think about college or deep into planning your first year, understanding the power of transfer can open doors you might not even know exist.

Let’s Set the Record Straight

Transferring doesn’t mean you failed. It means you’re focused. Students transfer for all kinds of reasons, and none of them are about giving up!

  • You discover a new academic passion and want a school that offers programs or resources that are a better fit.
  • You realize you need a campus environment that suits your style, such as a smaller college, a bigger city, or a more supportive community.
  • You’re searching for a path that’s more affordable and flexible.

These aren’t last-minute pivots. Most transfer students make their decisions with intention and clarity. They know what they want, and that motivation often helps them thrive in their next chapter.

It’s Also About Affordability

Here’s something you might not know: transferring can save you money (sometimes a lot of money!). Imagine starting your college journey at an affordable University System of Georgia (USG) institution, like a state or regional university, and then transferring to a school like Georgia Tech.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the math:

Institution Type Estimated Annual Tuition & Fees 2-Year Total Potential Savings vs. Starting at Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech (In-State) ~$11,764/year ~$23,528
USG Regional University ~$5,000–$6,500/year ~$10,000–$13,000 $10,000–$13,000

Those savings don’t factor in potentially lower housing costs, meal plans, and transportation costs at smaller or local colleges. Want to see more data? Check out the USG Tuition Rate per semester Fiscal Year 2026 Report.

Your Journey, Your Move

Every student’s educational path looks different. One of the most important things you can do along the way is stay open to new opportunities and feel confident making choices that move you closer to your goals. Don’t let someone tell you that transferring is “just a Plan B.” In reality, it’s a smart, intentional step that can open up entirely new chapters. It’s a sign of flexibility, self-awareness, and real life problem-solving. These qualities will serve you far beyond college.

Deciding to transfer is more than navigating classes and processing credits. It’s about expanding your world. When you transfer, you meet new people, gain fresh perspectives, and experience different campus cultures. It’s a chance to build your network, find new mentors, and grow in ways you might not have imagined.

Bottom Line

Transferring is a badge of vision and resourcefulness. If you’re thinking about switching schools, remember that successful students aren’t afraid to pause, reevaluate, and choose the path that’s right for them. Your college experience belongs to you, so be bold, stay curious, and make the moves that will help you succeed. And who knows? Transferring just might be your best move yet!!
