Dylan published a paper in Biomacromolecules titled “Protein Vesicles Self-Assembled from Functional Globular Proteins with Different Charge and Size“. This paper advances the understanding of vesicle self-assembly and demonstrates incorporation of active enzymes into fusion proteins vesicles. Congratulations Dylan!

Welcome to the two newest members of the Champion Lab!
Sydney Wimberley is joining us as an MS candidate in Bioengineering (ChBE home school) and an ACS Bridge Fellow. She recently completed her BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut.
Adaya Queen is also an MS candidate in ChBE and a GEM Associate Fellow. She just finished her BS in Chemical Engineering from the US Military Academy at West Point.
The paper entitled, “Rational Design of Antigen Incorporation Into Subunit Vaccine Biomaterials Can Enhance Antigen-Specific Immune Responses” was published in Frontiers in Immunology. The work was done in collaboration with Dr. Anant Paravastu’s group at Georgia Tech.
In collaboration with Dr. Christine Payne’s lab at Duke University, Thomas Pho was a co-author on the recently published paper, “Automation and low-cost proteomics for characterization of the protein corona: experimental methods for big data” in Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00216-020-02726-1
Congratulations to Dr. Adam Caparco for successfully defending his PhD thesis entitled “Chiral Amine Production with Cofactor Regeneration in Protein-Inorganic Self-Assembled Supraparticles” on May 7th, 2020. In our lab’s second ever virtual defense, Adam presented from his home in Atlanta as friends and family joined in from across the country!
We will truly miss Adam when he leaves, as he is our primary cloning and biocatalysis expert, a prolific birthday cake and bread baker, and the barista-in-chief of Champion lab coffee breaks. We wish Adam the best going forward and can’t wait to follow his academic career. Congratulations!
Congratulations to Dr. Alex Tsoras, who successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled “Protein and Peptide Nanocluster Synthesis and Functionality in Vaccine Applications.” on April 27th, 2020. Alex’s defense was the first virtual PhD defense in Champion Lab history due to current events which allowed Champion lab alumni and friends from across the country to tune in!
Going forward, Alex will be starting a position at Bristol Myers Squibb in Devens, MA at the end of June. We will greatly miss her presence as a senior leader in the lab, our resident vaccine expert, and, most importantly, our lead singer for birthday celebrations. Congratulations and good luck!
The first article is “Protein‐inorganic calcium‐phosphate supraparticles as a robust platform for enzyme co‐immobilization” in the April 2020 issue of Biotechnology and Bioengineering.
The second article is “Metagenomic Mining for Amine Dehydrogenase Discovery” in the April 2020 issue of Advanced Synthesis & Catalysis. The ASC article was published with collaborators at Genoscope in Evry, France, where Adam completed a STEM Chateaubriand fellowship last year.
Anshul published a paper in Biomacromolecules titled “Characterization and Control of Dynamic Rearrangement in a Self-Assembled Antibody Carrier”, alongside undergraduate researchers, Manny Hernandez and Hannah Howard. This paper not only applies advanced molecular characterization techniques to characterize the dynamics of a self-assembled protein complex, but also uses this information to design modified proteins that exhibit more desirable dynamics.
Congratulations to Anshul, Manny and Hannah!
Congratulations to Yirui for defending her PhD proposal entitled, “Engineering Recombinant Protein Vesicles for Delivery Applications.”
The fellowship provides research and travel support, and was awarded through the ChBE department at Georgia Tech. Congrats Anshul!
