We plan to stay in contact through GroupMe, and we will meet every Monday at 6 pm at the CULC to discuss the assigned readings.

Skimming is strategic and efficient. Always read the abstract and introduction. For the rest of the text, determine whether it is relevant.

All facts are someone’s facts.

Krause and Rucker

Terms: persuasion, storytelling, bias processing, strong facts, weak facts

Narrative: a communicative device that involves one or more characters, a series of connected events, and a coherent structure and context for those characters and events.

Fact: a piece of information presented as having objective reality.

Narrative and fact have an inverse relationship. When facts are weak, a compelling narrative is necessary. However, when facts are strong, a well-developed narrative isn’t needed.

After reading the article, I now understand that if I conduct a significant amount of research, the best way to present my work is by being as concise as possible. In other words, get right to the point and avoid unnecessary information intended to distract the reader.

The audience of the article includes but is not limited to authors seeking to improve their storytelling techniques.

In my opinion, the article was well-written. According to the text, “After all, academic research suggests that stories can bypass our natural resistance mechanisms; stories can lead people to give the speaker the benefit of the doubt, or to passively accept the viewpoint of the orator.” This quote stood out to me. I’m a big fan of movies; in particular, I love movies by Christopher Nolan. In my opinion, he’s a great storyteller, but more importantly, he cares a lot about the future of humanity. In most of his highly entertaining movies, he embeds facts and messages that he wants his audience to consume. Because his audience is so engaged with his movie, they become more willing to absorb information and consider unappealing arguments.

  1. The only issue with this theme is that the white text on a dark background gives you few options for highlighting your own ideas, your own thinking through connections between what you read and your own research.
