Alaska Airlines, headquartered in Seattle, is the sixth largest airline in North America and has a long history of serving smaller communities in Alaska. What started as air service out of Anchorage, Alaska in 1932 has grown into an airline that serves more than 115 destinations with about 1,200 daily flights in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Costa Rica. Today, ten percent of Alaska Airline’s network serves Alaska and includes a mix of larger cities such as Anchorage and Fairbanks as well as more than a dozen smaller communities including Barrow, Ketchikan, and Dutch Harbor.
Alaska Airlines has a well-established in-person internship program for students who are a year from graduation. Alaska Airlines’ internship program is an important part of its recruitment efforts, and in order for a department to sponsor an intern, they must commit to being able to offer a full-time position to the intern after graduation. Each department determines the specific projects that the intern will work on, and there are numerous social and professional networking opportunities for interns across the company to meet and exchange ideas and experiences. In addition, interns are offered flight benefits immediately upon being hired. In recent years, three interns from the MIT PODS Consortium have been hired into the Alaska family!
