Visit to Portage Glacier in Alaska

As part of a retreat before the ATL@GT meeting in Anchorage, ATL@GT students Maitreyee Talnikar, Rich Sarria, Tulio Sulbaran, and Gabriel Cedraz Diniz joined Center Director Dr. Garrow on a tour to learn about transportation and geological aspects unique to the state of Alaska. Students learned about how air transportation forms a vital lifeline to smaller communities in the state and the role of Lake Hood as one of the largest floatplane bases and got to see the Portage Glacier in Girdwood, Alaska up close! The glacier is close to another transportation marvel – the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel – which is the longest highway tunnel in North America that is a one-lane tunnel that must be shared by cars and trains traveling in both directions.
