Nanoscience Research topics and Current fields of interest
Theoretical development of fundamental aspects and
computational applications of many-body methods
(at zero and finite temperature) to describing
ground-state properties, electronic spectra, plasmon-like oscillations, decay,
fragmentation, and fission, as well as the
emergence of collective behavior
and collective excitations in condensed-matter, finite-size systems and
nanostructures; such
as metal clusters, complex carbon clusters (e.g., fullerenes, and
fullerene onions and coaxial nanotubes), helium-3 clusters,
metallic nanowires and nanoconstrictions, two-dimensional
semiconductor and graphene quantum dots,
rotating atoms and ions in harmonic, toroidal, and optical traps, and
quantum space-time crystals .
This area of research is highly interdisciplinary and
overlaps with several fields, such as condensed-matter physics, materials
science, computational physics, mesoscopics, physical chemistry, inorganic and
organic chemistry, quantum chemistry, few-body systems, the fractional quantum
Hall effect, atomic and molecular physics, Bose-Einstein condensation, trapped
ultracold atoms and ions, quantum physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics,
quantum computing, matter-wave interferometry, and quantum optics.

Examples of strongly correlated behavior in artificial nanostructures
Unrestricted Hartree-Fock
electron density in a parabolic quantum
dot for the case of 19 electrons at zero magnetic field, exhibiting
breaking of the circular symmetry and formation of a Wigner
crystallite (or Wigner molecule). For details, see publication
No. 67.
Conditional Probability Distributions for N=7 electrons at high
magnetic fields (the electronic wave functions are restricted to the lowest
Landau level).
The example shown corresponds to magic angular momentum L=105 (nu=1/5).
LEFT: the case of the rotating Wigner molecule (RWM);
CENTER: the exact-diagonalization (EXD) case;
RIGHT: the case of the Jastrow-Laughlin (JL)
wave function. Unlike the RWM wave function, the JL wave function fails
to capture the crystalline character of the EXD state.
For details, see publications No. 71 and 68.
